Analysis of Existing Music Videos

The upbeat start shows the band 'white lies' straight away. As this video involves the lead singer walking down a mysterious road, i thought it would be a good idea to analyse this and explain how it's a good video although it just involves walking. Close up camera shots are used on Harry's feet showing the fast pace he is walking, keeping in time with the beat of the music. The close ups also shown the drumming. By many different camera shots, two locations in this video are shown clearly. Due to the beat throughout the song, many images of running, a man in the gym, horses/dogs running creates a good theme throughout the video. Especially on the chorus 'keep on running, keep on running there's no place like home'. The video is clearly linked to the lyrics of the song so the audience understand and connect with the band more, making them more successful. Throughout the video, the lead singer Harry is shown walking out in the cold. The sky is changing colour each time showing the time has gone past although the music video only lasts 4 minutes. By the end the sun has nearly gone done showing Harry has kept running all day, showing he is determined for something. Audiences would admire this.

I chose to analyse this music video of Hysteria by Muse. Their music is mostly about relationships but it depends on how the audience see's it, as most people don't listen to the lyrics. I liked the fast camera shots which relate to the tone/beat of the music. I also liked the storyline to the video, connecting to the lyrics and the type of band it is. The dark themed video shows how gloomy and dull the video is supposed to come across to the audience watching it. The character is relating to any boys out there who can relate to this sort of situation. The actor portrays a very good vibe, and shows the meaning of the song across the audience. The intro seems mysterious due to the long shot followed by the tracking shot zooming in on the character in the background, which is a housekeeping lady. This gives the impression that the video is set in a hotel or some kind of service centre. The camera shot changes after the word 'rage' is shown, a man in pain i would say, which may let the audience think that the setting is somewhat different to what they thought. As you keep watching the man looks unwell (mentally) therefore the audience know what the video is about. The fast quick shots of his face show his horror and tension when the camera shows what the character is looking at himself. The video is filled with long shots and medium shots showing the puzzled character in his room. The man is obviously obsessed with this female character who is watching on videotape, this angers him resulting him to rage his anger and blow off steam in his room. The music builds up and the fast paced camera shots begin. Smashed up tv's, glass, the character screaming is all relating to that one word which was shown at the beginning of the video. 'Rage'. At the very end, it's like that didn't even happen.
This is the second chosen music video that I've decided to analysis. 'Decode' by Paramore, which is from the film Twilight. As this is a fairly new song seen on television, I could see that this music video was set in the woods, which is where Sammi and I have decided to locate our video. We thought it would help us look at the different camera angles, which we could use to make our video look effective. The video does not have a main theme as its featured in a film, viewers can tell this due to the band being seen throughout the video and also the lead singer. This camera shots are to show each member of the band playing the song. The lead singer connects to the song, as in many camera shots it shows her alone which relates to the lyrics, 'what kind of man that you are if you're a man at all well, I figure this one out on my own (I'm screaming , I love you so) on my own (but my thoughts you can't decode)'. At this part of the song, the camera is zoomed in on her, and when she sings 'on my own' it zooms out to a extreme long shot to show that she is alone in the woods. This makes the viewers feel sympathetic towards the lead singer as she's alone singing this song.

We firstly analysed 'Creep' by Radiohead, which is from the soundtrack of 2004 French movie 'Ills se marierent et eurent beaucoup d'enfants' a.k.a 'Happily Ever After'. In this music video the camera shots are mostly close ups to show the emotion on the two characters faces. The video begins with a medium shot establishes the setting which is a music store, the audience automatically thinks it's going to be a original music video until the second character enters the video, next to the girl listening to music . There is an instant tension between the two characters. Although this video is plain, it doesn't matter due to the presence of Johnny Depp. Viewers are attracted by the famous actor. The video becomes more exciting as the girl clearly believes that Johnny Depp has taken an interest in her, this is seen through the close up camera shots that show their emotion. The viewers are believed to think that the video has become a happy love story until Johnny Depp walks away. The girl then runs after him, trying to catch up with him, this place in the video the camera shots are fast to draw more tension towards the characters. The viewers still think the video is a love story until the girl finally finds him to show she has bought the soundtrack, Johnny Depp doesn't return her affection and the simple love story collapses. Radiohead's music is about realism and what life is really like and this video shows it. At the end of the video the girl ends up walking away alone, although she thought she would be walking away with him like a true love story. This part in the video really relates to the lyrics 'But i'm a creep, I'm a weirdo, What the hell am I doing here? I don't belong here. I don't belong here'.

Personal Introduction

For my year 13 media coursework, we were asked to create either a music promo video or a teaser trailer. When deciding with my partner, Samantha Bransby, we were stuck for choice between a horror trailer or a rock music video, and finally agreed to do both and combine the two! We chose to do this idea as we wanted to create a dramatic rock video to target our certain audience. My year 12 coursework was also aimed at the same audience which has already given me some research in that area, as I will know what they want to see and what interests them. As well as the video, we have to create a cover for its release and a magazine advert. Throughout my blog you will see the development of all our work and how my AS coursework helped me with doing the second part of my project, making the CD cover e.g using Photoshop. Im looking forward to start filming my music video! Enjoy my blog :).
